Louise

Designer

Did you always want to be a designer?

Yes, from a young age I have always had a passion for interior design as well as drawing and painting. I used to love watching the programme ‘Changing Rooms' and would come up with colour schemes and designs for my bedroom which my parents actually let me carry out!

Was it easy to get a start in the industry?

It wasn’t easy, I had to put myself out there and do a lot of placements (most of them unpaid) and network as much as possible. I think a lot of it is also down to luck and taking opportunities when they come your way. I got my placement at Arthouse through a chance encounter when I was working behind a bar whilst still studying at university. A customer happened to know one of the directors here and I managed to get a placement. I kept in touch by doing some freelancing and then once I graduated I came back for a paid placement….. and I have never looked back! I am really lucky that I can say I love my job, and the fact the team is so supportive and fun makes it even better.

You spend your days designing products for people’s homes, how does your home look like from a design perspective?

My home is a new build, so it’s contemporary but does also have some quirky features.  Downstairs is open plan and really light and airy with a Scandinavian feel. In contrast to that, upstairs we have created a living space that is completely dark blue so it’s really cosy and very dramatic. I like to experiment with different styles in various rooms as I see it as a good opportunity to try new looks. I’m always on the look out for a bargain!

Finish this sentence. On Sunday mornings, you can usually find me...

In bed! I do love my sleep I must admit. There’s nothing better than a lie in on a weekend!

What are you happiest doing, when you’re not working?

I really love playing the piano, for me it is a total escape. I enjoy listening to music and singing along although I’m not the best! I also like working out as much as I can. Exercising is really good for my mind as well as keeping  fit and healthy.

Beatles or Stones?

Definitely the Beatles. I’m a massive Beatles fan! I love their music and the whole pop culture they were part of. My dad is also a huge fan which definitely influenced me growing up.
